Bed and Breakfast
Staying at a bed and breakfast should be like going to stay at the home you wish you had. A good innkeeper dotes on you like your parents, but without the guilt and judgement. Usually, the choice of where to lodge on vacation is utilitarian. You choose a hotel that meets your budget and location requirements. Choosing to stay at a B&B, though, requires a different mindset. The B&B is the vacation.
Tall Ship Sailing: Not Only for the Fortunate
It was December 2002, and I had fallen in love with tall ship sailing just 2 years before.
It was a lifestyle I never dreamed possible for myself. As I wandered the Halifax waterfront during Tall Ships 2000, I came across a ship that particularly caught my eye. Her name, Eye of the Wind. As I watched people climbing aloft, doing various tasks and maintenance, I wondered, what kind of person do you have to be to find yourself working a job like that? Surely you must have spent your childhood messing around in small boats, learning important techniques and seamanship and teamwork. And you must be strong.
The Circus World Museum
Interestingly enough, much of the origins and folklore about circuses and clowns can be traced back to my home state of Wisconsin. A hundred years ago this year, James Anthony Bailey and P. T. Barnum joined the Ringling Brothers to form the world famous, and still touring, Ringling Brother and Barnum and Bailey Circus. It was originally started in tiny Delavan, Wisconsin– a town loves circuses so much, that it ran precursors to modern day circuses before Wisconsin even became a state, way back in 1841.
Wisconsin has often proudly shouldered the title as the nation’s ‘conscious,’ a simple and progressive state more concerned with the welfare of its own people tan anything else. Given that, it’s not surprising that it is a mecca for all things frivolous and childish. Apart from the circuses, it is also home to the Clown Hall of Fame, housed in Milwaukee and The Circus World Museum in Baraboo.
