The Path Less Traveled

Colorful Car Rapide - for local travel in Dakar, Senegal

I have to say that it was heartbreaking to leave my lovely apartment in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Not only did I have a stable job with generous vacation time (in publishing, no less!), dishes that matched, a closet full of swank outfits - in short, all the things one is supposed to have – but I was even surrounded by like-minded liberal types who shared many of my own values. Oddly, however, I was dissatisfied and decided in favor of a drastic change.

Along Estonia’s Lake Peipsi

Red Cliffs, Estonia

The vast expanse of Russia ends abruptly down the middle of Lake Peipsi, where the Republic of Estonia begins. Topography on the Estonian side is muted. Should the lake level ever rise significantly, there is little to keep waters from completely inundating the country. The area is heavily farmed, and individual fields are often separated by small groves of forests. And while animals can still be seen pulling heavily laden carts, mostly Soviet-era tractors plow the fields.

Bed and Breakfast

Cozy Room at Bed and Breakfast

Staying at a bed and breakfast should be like going to stay at the home you wish you had. A good innkeeper dotes on you like your parents, but without the guilt and judgement. Usually, the choice of where to lodge on vacation is utilitarian. You choose a hotel that meets your budget and location requirements. Choosing to stay at a B&B, though, requires a different mindset. The B&B is the vacation.

Please Tuck In Your Sheets And Get Ready For Takeoff…

yourfile.jpgI recently stumbled across an article on Singapore Airlines newest addition to their fleet: the Airbus A380. At over four stories tall and with a capacity of 853 passengers, at usurped Boeing’s iconic 747 as the largest and most spacious commercial jet. It has a few features that Boeing lacks, too. With private suites, beds, flat screen TVs and lobster and champagne meals, it is among the most luxurious places you can be, on ground or in the air, anywhere.

At 276,800 kilos and a length of 73 meters and a height of 24.1 meters it is the longest, tallest and heaviest plane ever produced– but it’s also the quietest and most fuel efficient as well.

Our Travel Picks of the Week : 10/26/07

Tourism is the world’s number one export earner, ahead of automotive products, chemicals and food, per UN. With nearly 1 billion travelers active around the globe every year, the impact of tourism is heavy, both on the environment and local communities. Here are green travel tips from Sarah Schlichter in How to Leave Nothing but a Footprint in Your Travels.

One of the most cumbersome things to do while traveling is calculating how much something actually costs in one’s own currency. Add to that service charges and fees to convert your money, how you pay becomes as important as how much you pay says Carol Pucci in The exchange game : Pay attention when it’s time to pay

Tall Ship Sailing: Not Only for the Fortunate

Eye of the WindIt was December 2002, and I had fallen in love with tall ship sailing just 2 years before.

It was a lifestyle I never dreamed possible for myself. As I wandered the Halifax waterfront during Tall Ships 2000, I came across a ship that particularly caught my eye. Her name, Eye of the Wind. As I watched people climbing aloft, doing various tasks and maintenance, I wondered, what kind of person do you have to be to find yourself working a job like that? Surely you must have spent your childhood messing around in small boats, learning important techniques and seamanship and teamwork. And you must be strong.
